Question 1: How do we know there is a God?

Everything God made - like the stars and the trees - and our feeling of right and wrong tell us that God is real, but only God's Word and Spirit show us how to be saved.

God's Word says: Romans 1:18–20; Psalm 19:1–2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21–24; 2:9, 10; Matthew 11:27.

Question 2: What is the Word of God?

The Old and New Testaments are God’s inspired Word. They are the only perfect rule for what to believe, and how to live.

God's Word says: Scripture: 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5:17– 18; 1 Corinthians 2:13; Psalm 19:7–8.

Question 3: How do we know that the Bible is the Word of God?

The Bible proves it is God’s Word by its amazing power to change hearts and lives, and by the way all of its parts point to Jesus.

God's Word says: 1 Corinthians 2:6–7,13–16; Psalm 19:7–9; 119:18,129; Acts 10:43; 26:22; 18:28; Hebrews 4:12; Romans 15:4; John 16:13,14; 1 John 2:20–27; 2 Corinthians 3:14–17; 4:4, 6.

Question 4: What do the Scriptures mainly teach?

The Bible tells us what to believe about God and how God wants us to live – and Jesus is its fulfillment.

God's Word says: 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; John 20:31; Acts 24:14; 1 Corinthians 10:11; Ecclesiastes 12:13.

Question 5: What is God?

God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He has no beginning or end. His ways are perfect and unchanging.

God's Word says: John 4:24; Psalm 89:14; 90:2; 147:5; James 1:17; Revelation 4:8; Exodus 34:6, 7; 1 Timothy 1:17; Numbers 23:19.

Question 6: How many persons are there in the Godhead?

There is only one God, but he is three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God's Word says: 1 Corinthians 2:11; 8:6; John 1:1; 10:30; 14:9; 20:28; Acts 5:3,4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3.

Question 7: What are the decrees of God?

God has a perfect plan for everything that ever happens, and he decided it all before the world began, for our good and his glory.

God's Word says: Ephesians 1:11; Romans 11:36; Daniel 4:35; Isaiah 46:10; Psalm 115:3; Amos 3:6.

Question 8: How does God execute his decrees?

God makes everything happen exactly the way he planned - by creating the world and ruling over it every day.

God's Word says: Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Matthew 5:45; 6:26; Acts 14:17: Proverbs 16:9, 33; 19:21; 20:24; 21:1, 31.

Question 9: What are God’s works of providence?

God’s providence means he lovingly takes care of everything he made, sustaining it and ruling over all that happens.

God's Word says: Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3; Psalm 103:19; Matthew 10:29–30.

Question 10: What is the work of creation?

God made everything out of nothing, just by speaking. He created the whole world and everything in it, and it was all very good.

God's Word says: Genesis 1:1, 31; Hebrews 11:3; Exodus 20:11; Romans 4:17.

Question 11: How and why did God create us?

God made us male and female in his image, to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. Our true purpose is to live for him.

Question 12: What is the duty which God requires of man?

God requires man to love and obey him perfectly from the heart.

God's Word says: Matthew 5; Galatians 5:6; 1 Thessalonians 1:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:11; Romans 1:5; 16:26; 15:18.

Question 13: What did God reveal to man for the duty he requires?

From the very beginning, God put his rules about right and wrong on every human heart. Later he summarized these in the Ten Commandments.

Question 14: Under the Old Covenant, what does God require in the first, second, and third commandments?

First, that we know God as the only true God. Second, that we don’t worship other things like they are God. Third, that we treat God’s name with fear and respect.

Question 15: Under the Old Covenant, what does God require in the fourth and fifth commandments?

Fourth, that on the Sabbath day we spend time in worship of God. Fifth, that we love and honour our father and our mother.

Question 16: Under the Old Covenant, what does God require in the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandments?

Sixth, that we do not hurt or hate people. Seventh, that we avoid sexual sin. Eighth, that we do not steal.

Question 17: Under the Old Covenant, what does God require in the ninth and tenth commandments?

Ninth, that we do not lie or deceive. Tenth, that we are happy with what God has given us and don’t envy what he’s given to others.

Question 18: What is the sum of the Ten Commandments, under the Old Covenant?

The sum of the Ten Commandments is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love others the same way we love ourselves.

Question 19: Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly?

Since the fall, no human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly. Instead, we break God’s law in the way that we think, speak, and act.

Question 20: Did God create us unable to keep his law?

No, but because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve, we are all born sinners and can’t keep God’s law.

Question 21: Since no one can keep the law, what is its purpose?

God gave the law to show how perfect he is, how sinful we are, and to make us run to Jesus - because only he can save us through faith.

Question 22: Are all transgressions of the law equally evil in God’s sight?

No. Some sins are worse than others because they offend God or hurt people more, or because they are done on purpose by someone who knows better.

Question 23: What is sin?

Sin is anything we think, say, or do that disobeys God, since he has told us to live holy lives of faith, for his glory.

God's Word says: 1 John 3:4; Romans 5:13; 14:23; 1 Peter 1:16; Matthew 5:48; 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Question 24: Did all mankind fall in Adam’s first sin?

Yes. God chose Adam to represent all of us. When he sinned, we were all counted as sinners too, and now we’re born with hearts that naturally want to sin instead of obey.

Question 25: Will God allow our disobedience to go unpunished?

No. When we sin, we rebel against God. Because he is perfectly good and just, he must punish every sin.

Question 26: Is there any way to escape the guilt and power of sin and the judgment we deserve?

Yes! God loves us so much that he made a New Covenant: he sent Jesus to take our punishment, forgive our sins, give us new hearts, and rescue us from wrath.

Question 27: What makes the New Covenant new and better?

The Old Covenant couldn’t change our hard hearts, but in the New Covenant God forgives all our sins, writes his law on our hearts, gives us his Spirit, and helps us truly know and love him..

Question 28: How did God establish this New Covenant?

God established the New Covenant through the death of Jesus - who is truly God and truly man.

God's Word says: Luke 22:20; Heb 9:15; 10:12–18; 13:20–21; 1 Tim 2:5; Heb 8:6; 9:15; 12:24

Question 29: Why must the Redeemer be truly human?

Jesus had to be a real human so he could perfectly obey God’s law for us, take our punishment on the cross, and so we could know that he truly understands our struggles.

Question 30: Why must the Redeemer be truly God?

Jesus had to be God so his perfect life and death could pay for everyone’s sins, so he could beat death and bear God’s judgment for us.

Question 31: Who is the Redeemer of the New Covenant?

The only Redeemer is Jesus Christ, God’s Son. He became a man and died as the perfect sacrifice so we could be saved and receive all the blessings of the New Covenant.

Question 32: As Redeemer and Ratifier of the New Covenant, what does Jesus Christ receive?

Jesus receives his Church and all of creation as his everlasting kingdom. He will rule over it all, to the glory of God forever.

Question 33: Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer, to die?

Because the cost of our sins is death, Christ took our sins upon himself and died in our place.

Question 34: Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ?

No. Everyone is born a sinner because of Adam, but only those who repent and believe in Jesus Christ are saved.

Question 35: Does God show grace even to the unbeliever?

Yes. God is kind to everyone. He holds back sin and gives good things like rain and food, even to people who don’t love him.

Question 36: What happens after death to those not united to Christ by faith?

They will stand before God and be sent away from him into hell, where they will be punished for their sin forever.

Question 37: How can we be saved?

We can only be saved by repenting and believing in Jesus, trusting what he did for us on the cross. When we do, God forgives us by his grace for Jesus’ sake.

Question 38: What blessings flow from our union with Christ?

All spiritual blessings come from being joined to Jesus, like our justification, adoption, and sanctification.

Question 39: What do justification, adoption, and sanctification mean?

Justification means that God declares us innocent because Jesus took our punishment. Adoption means that God makes us his own children forever. Sanctification means that God’s Spirit helps us grow to love and obey him more every day.

Question 40: Should those who have faith in Christ seek their salvation through their own works, or anywhere else?

No. Jesus did everything needed to save us. Trying to earn it by good works says Jesus’ cross wasn’t enough.

Question 41: Since we are redeemed by grace, apart from works, what purpose do good works now serve?

Yes. Jesus saved us so we would love doing good things for him, not to earn salvation, but because salvation is already ours.

Question 42: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?

All the good gifts we receive from Jesus, including the faith to trust him, are given to us by the Holy Spirit.

Question 43: What new desires does the Holy Spirit give to the Redeemed?

The Holy Spirit gives us new desires to love God and others, to hate sin, and to live a life that honours Jesus to the glory of the Father.

Question 44: What kind of community should the church of the redeemed be?

The church should be like a loving family. By God’s Spirit, we can help, forgive, and serve one another, working to live in unity. When we do, we show the world that we belong to Jesus.

Question 45: Will Christians still sin after they are saved?

Yes, we still sin, but we don’t love sin anymore. When we sin, we feel sorry, tell God, and turn away from it because sin is no longer our master.

Question 46: What should a Christian do when they sin?

When we sin, we should quickly confess it to God, trusting his promise to forgive and change us because Jesus has already paid for all of our sins.

Question 47: When Christians sin, will they face condemnation?

No. Jesus already took all our punishment on the cross. When we sin, God corrects us like a loving Father, but he never condemns us.

Question 48: Will all Christians ultimately be glorified?

Yes. God promises to keep every person who truly loves Jesus in the faith all the way to the end. Anyone who completely turns away from Jesus, never truly believed in him.

Question 49: How does God help Christians obey him?

God helps us obey by his Holy Spirit working in us, by his word instructing us, by prayer, and by other believers loving and helping us.

Question 50: What can those who are redeemed by Christ expect in this life?

We will have joy in knowing Jesus, grow in loving him more, and sometimes face hard things because we belong to him.

Question 51: Why do Christians still face trials and suffering?

God uses trials to make us like Jesus, to strengthen our faith, to teach us how to comfort others, and to help us look forward to eternity with him.

Question 52: What is the Christian’s great hope while living in this world?

Our great hope is that Jesus is coming again to make us perfect, to stop all suffering, to make a new world, and to live with us forever in his new creation.

Question 53: How should Christians live while waiting for Jesus to return?

By God’s Holy Spirit, we should live holy lives, love and serve each other, tell people about Jesus, and do everything to honour God.

Question 54: What do we believe about the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God, just like the Father and the Son. He lives inside every person who believes in Jesus, and he never leaves.

Question 55: How does the Holy Spirit help us?

The Holy Spirit comforts us, guides us, convicts us of our sins, helps us understand the Bible, prays for us, and gives us the power to obey God.

Question 56: What is prayer?

Prayer is talking to God with our whole heart. We praise him, make requests, repent and give thanks.

Question 57: With what attitude should we pray?

We pray with love, patience, and gratefulness, trusting God's will. We know he always hears us because of Jesus.

Question 58: What should we pray?

We should pray according to God’s Word. Our best model is the prayer Jesus taught us, called “The Lord's Prayer.”

Question 59: What is the Lord’s Prayer?

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Question 60: How is the Word of God to be read and heard?

Carefully, with ready hearts and prayer, so we can believe it, remember it, and obey it every day.

Question 61: What is the invisible church?

The invisible church is all the people God has chosen to save - from the past, present, and future - who truly belong to Jesus.

God's Word says: Ephesians 1:10; 1:22, 23; John 10:16; 11:52

Question 62: What is the visible church?

The visible church is a family of baptized believers who meet together regularly to worship Jesus, learn from the Bible, pray, take communion, and help each other follow him.

God's Word says: Acts 2:42; 20:7; 7:38; Ephesians 4:11, 12.

Question 63: What are the ordinances?

The ordinances are the two symbolic acts Jesus told the church to do - baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The Spirit uses them to remind us of everything Jesus has done for us, and to show everyone that we belong to him.

Question 64: What is baptism?

Baptism is when a person who has decided to follow Jesus is put all the way under water and brought back up again. It shows everyone that this person has been cleansed from their sin, united to Jesus, made new by his Spirit, and added to the church.

Question 65: To whom is Baptism to be administered?

Baptism is only for those who have repented of sin, put their faith in Jesus, and want to obey him.

God's Word says: Acts 2:38; 8:12, 36; 10:47, 48; Matthew 3:6; Mark 16:16.

Question 66: Are the infants of professing believers to be baptized?

No. The Bible does not teach us to baptize infants.

God's Word says: Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21; Galatians 3:26, 27.

Question 67: What is the duty of those who are rightly baptized?

People who have been baptized should live for Jesus as part of a faithful church.

God's Word says: Acts 2:46, 47; 9:26; 1 Peter 2:5; Hebrews 10:25; Romans 16:5.

Question 68: What is the Lord’s Supper?

The Lord's Supper is a meal Jesus commanded for his church. When we drink from the cup and eat bread together, it reminds us of Jesus’ death, strengthens our faith, and shows our unity as fellow believers.

Question 69: What is required to rightly receive the Lord’s Supper?

We must examine ourselves to make sure we remember Jesus' sacrifice, which saved and joined us together as one body.

Question 70: Does the Lord’s Supper add anything to Christ’s atoning work?

No, Jesus finished his work on the cross. The Lord’s Supper only celebrates his sacrifice and strengthens our faith until he returns.
